ShortTail: taming tail latency for erasure-code-based in-memory systems Research Article

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2022, Volume 23, Issue 11,   Pages 1646-1657 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.2100566

Abstract:

s with erasure coding (EC) enabled are widely used to achieve high performance and data availability. However, as the scale of clusters grows, the server-level fail-slow problem is becoming increasingly frequent, which can create long . The influence of long is further amplified in EC-based systems due to the synchronous nature of multiple EC sub-operations. In this paper, we propose an EC-enabled in-memory storage system called ShortTail, which can achieve consistent performance and low latency for both reads and writes. First, ShortTail uses a lightweight request monitor to track the performance of each memory node and identify any fail-slow node. Second, ShortTail selectively performs degraded reads and redirected writes to avoid accessing fail-slow nodes. Finally, ShortTail posts an adaptive write strategy to reduce write amplification of s. We implement ShortTail on top of Memcached and compare it with two baseline systems. The experimental results show that ShortTail can reduce the P99 by up to 63.77%; it also brings significant improvements in the median latency and average latency.

Microdamage study of granite under thermomechanical coupling based on the particle flow code

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering   Pages 1413-1427 doi: 10.1007/s11709-023-0953-2

Abstract: The thermomechanical coupling of rocks refers to the interaction between the mechanical and thermodynamic behaviors of rocks induced by temperature changes. The study of this coupling interaction is essential for understanding the mechanical and thermodynamic properties of the surrounding rocks in underground engineering. In this study, an improved temperature-dependent linear parallel bond model is introduced under the framework of a particle flow simulation. A series of numerical thermomechanical coupling tests are then conducted to calibrate the micro-parameters of the proposed model by considering the mechanical behavior of the rock under different thermomechanical loadings. Good agreement between the numerical results and experimental data are obtained, particularly in terms of the compression, tension, and elastic responses of granite. With this improved model, the thermodynamic response and underlying cracking behavior of a deep-buried tunnel under different thermal loading conditions are investigated and discussed in detail.

Experimental study of wind loads on gable roofs of low-rise buildings with overhangs

Peng HUANG, Ling TAO, Ming GU, Yong QUAN

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2018, Volume 12, Issue 3,   Pages 300-317 doi: 10.1007/s11709-018-0449-7

Abstract:

Gable roofs with overhangs (eaves) are the common constructions of low-rise buildings on the southeastern coast of China, and they were vulnerable to typhoons from experience. The wind pressure distributions on gable roofs of low-rise buildings are investigated by a series of wind tunnel tests which consist of 99 test cases with various roof pitches, height-depth ratios and width-depth ratios. The block pressure coefficients and worst negative (block) pressure coefficients on different roof regions of low-rise buildings are proposed for the main structure and building envelope, respectively. The effects of roof pitch, height-depth ratio, and width-depth ratio on the pressure coefficients of each region are analyzed in detail. In addition, the pressure coefficients on the roofs for the main structure and building envelope are fitted according to roof pitch, height-depth ratio and width-depth ratio of the low-rise building. Meanwhile, the rationality of the fitting formulas is verified by comparing the fitting results with the codes of different countries. Lastly, the block pressure coefficients and worst negative pressure coefficients are recommended to guide the design of low-rise buildings in typhoon area and act as references for the future’s modification of wind load codes.
